Stephen Edwin King (born in Portland, Maine, USA, September 21, 1947, age 70) is a contemporary American writer. His horror, science-fiction and fantasy novels have sold over 350 million copies worldwide, and some have been adapted into films, television, and comic books. King has published fifty novels, seven of them published with pen names Richard Bachman, as well as five nonfiction books. He has also written nearly two hundred short stories, mostly published in nine short fictional collections. Most of King's novels are in place in his hometown of Maine.
